Our long-term client relationship with NASA has led to a need for a Visiting Vehicle Engineer on the Mission and Program Integration (MAPI) contract at Johnson Space Center (Houston, TX).

The MAPI contract provides program support related to strategic and tactical planning, engineering analysis, manifest development and hardware certification, safety and mission assurance, risk management, information technology, payload integration, program science and research. This includes support of mission and program integration and necessary infrastructure operations functions for the International Space Station (ISS).

MAPI also provides support to NASA’s Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) program. We deliver products and professional services to the Program Planning and Control Office, systems engineering and integration services to the Vehicle Integration Office and Crew and Service Module Office, and to the test and verification activities for multiple Orion Offices for the design of NASA’s Orion Exploration Vehicle.

The position is on the Mission and Program Integration (MAPI) contract to NASA serving as a Visiting Vehicle Engineer (VVE) to the Manifest and Cargo Integration team.

MAPI is a Completion Form contract, which means that MAPI team members are expected to evaluate and understand the requirements that drive contract product deliveries. Team members are then expected to perform the work with little to no daily tasking and involvement from NASA. Therefore, the successful applicant will not only be able to work within a team environment, but they will be able to successfully complete all tasks on schedule with little supervision.

The applicant will be expected to be proactive and flexible in evaluating sometimes-competing requirements in order to efficiently provide NASA with vehicle manifests that ensure all mission requirements are met while being able to handle contingencies that may drive manifest changes. The applicant will also need to perform work-studies in order to evaluate multiple possible manifest scenarios. In the performance of their tasks, the applicant will be expected to provide NASA with completed products accompanied by recommendations and alternatives.

The Visiting Vehicle Engineer (VVE) will:

  • Manage the launch and return manifest for ISS cargo vehicles including the Space-X Dragon, Orbital Cygnus, JAXA H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV), Russian Soyuz and Progress, and future commercial crewed vehicles. Management of the manifest entails gathering launch/return requirements, reviewing hardware data, prioritizing cargo, analyzing cargo layouts, determining flight assignments, and reporting manifest details.

  • Coordinate with technical teams within the ISS Program Office, Flight Operations Directorate (FOD), International Partner (IP), contractor, and commercial provider community to ensure integration of cargo requirements, confirmation of cargo open paper status, and adherence to cargo schedule milestones.

  • Track and review cargo data such as Material safety data sheets (MSDS), Electronic Launch-Return On-Orbit Datasets (eLROD), Technical Data Sheets (TDS), and Safety Data packages.

  • Provide thorough reviews of cargo data for completeness and accuracy, resolving technical discrepancies, and approval of cargo data for inclusion in the manifest.

  • Provide management of the real-time return transfer chit process including coordination of special handling requirements such as early destow and priority shipping.

  • Provide facilitation of Visiting Vehicle Integrated Product Team (VV-IPT) meetings.

  • Develop and present integrated recommendations and priority trade results to decision-making forums for concurrence.

  • Provide administrative tasks in support of standard product development, weekly meetings, and the tracking of action items to closure.

  • Support IP teleconferences, Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs), and protocol development.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • BS degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

  • Excellent communication, integration, coordination, facilitation, conflict resolution, and presentation skills.

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment to perform assigned tasks.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Sharepoint.


  • Familiarity with the International Space Station (ISS), ISS hardware, and ISS cargo integration operations.

  • Working knowledge of MCC-H Gateway, Excel VBA, CMC tools, Legacy MIDAS, and MIDAS Prime.

Essential Requirements:

  • Applicant selected must be a US citizen and may be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lb.

  • Must have sufficient mobility to enter areas of test facilities where necessary.

  • Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
